Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check an Amtrak train's status?
Enter the train number in the search bar, or search for a station to see its departures. LiveTrainTracker shows the latest data published by Amtraker.
Which trains does LiveTrainTracker cover?
Amtrak trains, with live status from Amtraker. The train times search also includes Caltrain schedules.
How accurate is the data?
LiveTrainTracker shows the latest snapshot from Amtraker, which can lag behind Amtrak's own updates. Check with Amtrak before you make an important travel decision.
Is LiveTrainTracker free?
Yes. LiveTrainTracker is free, and you don't need an account to use it.
Is LiveTrainTracker affiliated with Amtrak?
No. LiveTrainTracker is an independent service and is not affiliated with Amtrak. It uses publicly available data.
My train is delayed. What should I do?
Watch for updates from Amtrak and check its refund and exchange policy. Whether you can get a refund or travel credit depends on your fare and your trip, and only Amtrak can decide.
Where can I find Amtrak service alerts?
LiveTrainTracker shows cancellations when its data source reports them, but it is not a complete alert service. For service disruptions, check Amtrak's official service alerts.
What's the difference between Acela, Northeast Regional and long-distance trains?
Acela is Amtrak's fastest train on the Northeast Corridor between Washington, New York and Boston, with fewer stops. Northeast Regional trains run on the same corridor, make more stops and usually cost less. Long-distance trains, such as the Crescent or the California Zephyr, cover much longer routes and most have sleeper cars. LiveTrainTracker shows all of them when Amtraker publishes their data.
Why isn't a train's position on the map always exact?
The map shows the last location Amtrak reported for each train. A report can be a few minutes old, so a moving train may be farther along than it appears. When a train has no reported location, its position is estimated from the schedule and the latest delay.
